Change in the geography of US military support
The administration of US President Donald Trump has decided to reroute $52 million in military aid. Funds originally planned for countries in Europe and the Middle East are now being directed to support states in Latin America. According to the data, the recipients of these funds will be Panama, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia.
Initial purpose of the appropriations
The Washington Post reports, citing three US officials familiar with the situation, that these funds were initially intended for Slovakia, North Macedonia, Tunisia and Iraq. A significant portion of the funding was provided by Congress within the framework of a supplemental appropriations bill related to supporting Ukraine and European allies.
Justification for the State Department's decisions
The US State Department explains the redirection of funds by stating that their use in the Western Hemisphere will strengthen the security partnership of the United States. The official position also points to the need to help counter the military and drug trafficking influence of adversaries in the region.
Criticism from Democrats
The administration's decision has met with resistance among Democrats in Congress. Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Gregory Meeks stated that the administration does not have unlimited authority to change the purpose of funds that Congress allocated for specific goals. The politicians argue that such a redirection may conflict with current legislative requirements.
