President's response to opponents' plans

US President Donald Trump voiced harsh criticism towards members of the Democratic Party who have planned to scrutinise the activities of his administration and Republican Party donors. The Republican leader stated that he has already ordered the Department of Justice to launch its own investigation against political opponents.

Context of the change in power in Congress

These measures by the Democrats are linked to their decisive victory in the midterm elections. In January, they will gain control of both chambers of the US Congress. The politicians have already promised to initiate a series of investigations into the work of the Trump administration and warned key figures in the government of the need to hire lawyers.

Trump accused his opponents of threatening many people with impeachment. He characterised such actions as extortion and emphasised that those responsible must face accountability, although he did not specify which crimes were meant. In the view of the American president, the Democrats' threats are an example of using state institutions and the judicial system as a weapon on a new level.

What Democrats plan to investigate

Earlier, representatives of the Democratic Party made it clear that they would use their new investigative powers to examine a wide range of issues. In particular, they plan to review evidence in the case of the controversial financier Jeffrey Epstein and how the Trump administration processed documents that Congress had demanded be made public.

The Democrats also promised to investigate Trump's tariff and migration policies, stock trading, and other areas of activity.
