Tragedy on the road in Wake County

A fatal road traffic accident occurred in the US state of North Carolina, resulting in the death of one road user and injuries to 22 others. A car ploughed into a group of cyclists travelling along the road.

Circumstances of the collision

According to the state highway patrol, the incident took place on Saturday, 7 November, at 9:30 am local time. The driver of a passenger car violated traffic rules by crossing the centre line separating opposing traffic flows, after which he struck the cycling group.

Driver's actions after the accident

After colliding with the cyclists, the car did not stop. The driver continued driving until he left the roadway and ended up in the ditch. A 76-year-old man was behind the wheel.

Law enforcement suspicions

Police detained the driver, who is now awaiting the filing of formal charges. Law enforcement agencies report that there are grounds to believe the man may have been under the influence of certain substances at the time of the accident.
