Appointment of prime ministerial candidate
Israeli President Itzhak Herzog will transfer the mandate to form a new government to Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the Yashar party. This decision was made following parliamentary elections, the results of which did not provide any political camp with a clear majority to independently form a coalition.
Results of consultations with factions
During negotiations with the President, factions that together control 67 seats in the Knesset expressed support for Eisenkot's candidacy. In contrast, representatives of factions holding 46 mandates recommended that the position of prime minister remain with the current head of government, Benjamin Netanyahu, leader of the Likud party. Another faction, which holds seven seats, declined to recommend any of the candidates.
Political context and the Eisenkot bloc's position
Gadi Eisenkot, who previously served as Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, is Netanyahu's main political rival. His political bloc categorically opposes cooperation with Arab parties, although their support could theoretically have secured him the necessary majority.
Position of Arab leaders
Meanwhile, Arab political leaders, who have expressed dissatisfaction with the policies of Benjamin Netanyahu and his far-right allies, also supported Eisenkot's candidacy during the consultations.
Deadlines for cabinet formation
Gadi Eisenkot was invited to the presidential residence on Sunday, 8 November, at 17:00. Under the law, the candidate has 28 days to form a new government. If necessary, the President has the right to extend this period by a maximum of 14 days.
