Representatives of the Serbian political movement Student List firmly rejected the statements made by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. The movement, which, according to sources, won the recent parliamentary elections, emphasised that Belgrade will not change its position regarding Moscow and does not plan to introduce sanctions against Russia.
In a comment to Russian media, movement representative Jovo Bakic emphasised that Serbia will continue to regard Russia as an important historical partner.
“Ми поважаємо Росію і як велику державу, і як історично важливого для нас партнера, а в багатьох випадках — і захисника. У цьому питанні жодних змін не буде” (We respect Russia both as a great power and as a historically important partner for us, and in many cases — a protector. There will be no changes in this matter), Bakic stated.
According to the politician, potential sanctions from Serbia would hardly have a significant impact on Russia, but would be a negative symbolic step.
Bakic also made it clear that the country has no intention of abandoning Russian gas, despite pressure from the European Commission.
“Ми тут не для того, щоб задовольняти іноземців, а для того, щоб діяти в наших національних інтересах” (We are not here to please foreigners, but to act in our national interests), the Student List representative emphasised.
