Russian military propagandist, retired Colonel Viktor Baranets made a statement directly pointing to the involvement of Russian military personnel in the downing of Malaysia Airlines passenger flight MH17, which occurred in July 2014 over the Donetsk region.

Statement from Russian radio broadcast

A recording of Baranets' conversation on the Russian radio station "Komsomolskaya Pravda" is being shared online. During his appearance, the propagandist stated the following:

«Малайзийский Боинг сбили русские офицеры. Потому что эта зараза залезла в наше небо» (The Malaysian Boeing was shot down by Russian officers. Because this piece of junk flew into our sky), — Baranets stated.

Context of the tragedy and court ruling

On 17 July 2014, a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 passenger plane was shot down over the occupied part of the Donetsk region while operating flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. There were 298 people on board, all of whom died.

In November 2022, the Hague District Court established that the plane was shot down by a missile from a Russian Buk air defence system, launched near the village of Pervomaiske in the occupied territory of the Donetsk region. Igor Girkin, Sergey Dubinsky, and Leonid Kharchenko were sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia.
