Russian technology companies began preparing for potential infrastructure risks before Ukraine carried out its first strikes on data centre facilities. This was reported by the BBC Russian Service.
Preventive measures by major players
According to the publication, Yandex systematically conducted training sessions during which scenarios for disconnection and traffic redirection were rehearsed. Meanwhile, demand for mobile data centres (DCs) was observed to be growing in Russia. Such solutions attracted interest not only from major IT corporations and mobile operators but also from representatives of medium and large businesses.
Equipment market and key suppliers
Demand for mobile data centres began to rise in late summer. One supplier of such equipment is linked to the son of the First Deputy Director of the FSB, Sergei Korolev. In Russia, equipment is supplied by Rostelecom’s subsidiary RTK-DC and the company Yadro, which is part of X Holding. Boris Korolev, the son of a senior FSB official, serves as Deputy General Director of the holding.
In 2026, Yadro presented the Borey containerised data centre. According to state procurement data analysed by the BBC, the cost of such a system without servers ranges from 18 to 25 million rubles. If the configuration includes computing equipment, the price can reach hundreds of millions of rubles. Sales of such complexes have been ongoing for several months.
“The news backdrop is favourable for new sales, even too much,” a market participant told the publication.
Government recommendations and risk geography
BBC sources in the industry note that the threat of attacks on Russian data centres has been discussed since late summer. Meanwhile, approximately two-thirds of all Russian data centres are located in the Moscow region and St Petersburg.
On 6 October, a few days before the first attack on Yandex facilities, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Digital Transformation Evhen Filatov called for moving computing capacity beyond the Urals, to regions “where, fortunately, they have not yet flown”.
