The Ukrainian people and President Volodymyr Zelensky will become recipients of the most prestigious state award of the federal state of Hesse in Germany. The Wilhelm Leichner Medal will be presented for the efforts of Ukrainians in defending their state against Russian aggression.
Details of the award ceremony
The Hesse Chancellery announced the relevant decision. The solemn presentation of the honour is scheduled for 1 December 2026. This date coincides with the celebration of Constitution Day in the state. The key figure at the event will be Hesse Prime Minister Boris Rhein, who will personally present the award.
Position of Hesse leadership
Boris Rhein explained that this recognition is a result of the Ukrainian leader's activities during the full-scale Russian invasion. According to him, Volodymyr Zelensky is making exceptional efforts to protect the country's independence and its democratic system.
«Я дуже пишаюся тим, що маю честь нагородити президента Зеленського медаллю імені Вільгельма Лейшнера за його безпрецедентну самовіддачу. З початку російської агресивної війни проти України президент Зеленський у видатний спосіб докладав зусиль для захисту своєї країни та її демократичного ладу» (I am very proud to have the honour of awarding President Zelensky with the Wilhelm Leichner Medal for his unprecedented dedication. Since the beginning of Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, President Zelensky has made outstanding efforts to defend his country and its democratic order), Rhein stated.
The head of the Hesse government also emphasised that this decision demonstrates the German state's solidarity with Ukraine. He assured that the federal state will continue to support Ukrainians in their fight for independence and European values.
