A call has emerged in Germany to conclude a so-called “diesel deal” with Russia, similar to the agreement reached between the US and the Russian Federation. The initiator of this idea also advocated for a return to regular imports of Russian oil and gas. Proponents of this approach are convinced that it will allow fuel prices to be lowered and the situation of German industry to be stabilised.
Position of the BSW representative
Claudia Wittig, deputy head of the “Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance” (BSW) parliamentary faction in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, stated the need to change course regarding energy carriers. She expressed her opinion in an interview with the Reuters agency.
According to Wittig, the level of fuel prices at German petrol stations has reached a “scandalous” level. The politician believes that the sanctions policy against Russia has completely failed, as, in her assessment, these measures harm Germany itself above all.
Arguments and context
Wittig called for not limiting the issue to diesel fuel alone, but for resuming regular supplies of Russian energy carriers, in particular oil and gas. She cited the need to support the country's industry as the main argument in favour of such a position.
This initiative emerged against the backdrop of previously published information about an agreement between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin regarding the supply of Russian diesel fuel to the US. Meanwhile, the German government officially stated that it does not intend to abandon its sanctions policy towards Russia.
