Creating a radio-electronic barrier over the capital

Ukraine is actively engaged in securing urban territories, in addition to combat operations along the front line. A key direction has become countering Russian unmanned aerial vehicles, which pose a threat to civilian infrastructure and residents. Electronic warfare expert Serhiy "Flash" reported the completion of a special operation aimed at forming a protective "dome" of electronic warfare means over Kyiv.

The main task of this barrier is to prevent Russian military forces from remotely controlling jet-powered Shahed drones via radio communication. As the expert explained, the enemy uses MESH radio communication technology, which allows data to be transmitted between devices through a network. This enables an operator located on Russian territory to control a drone equipped with a radio modem during its flight to a target in Ukraine.

Technical challenges and scale of operations

The use of such technology creates additional difficulties for air defence. Therefore, Ukrainian specialists focused on blocking the specific communication channel through which commands are transmitted. The creation of the electronic warfare "dome" aimed to disrupt or complicate this link.

According to Serhiy "Flash", the scale of the work was significant. Over several weeks, antennas and special equipment were installed at hundreds of locations across Kyiv. Leading Ukrainian manufacturers of electronic warfare equipment were involved in the process, working around the clock to produce and install equipment at designated sites.

Inter-agency coordination and oversight

Implementing the project required close cooperation between numerous state structures and military units. The operation involved the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Security and Defence Council, and the Office of the President, as well as other units of the Defence Forces. Serhiy "Flash" emphasised that the activity was under the constant oversight of the President of Ukraine.

The complexity lay not only in the technical difficulty of installing the equipment but also in the need to quickly coordinate the actions of various institutions and organise production within tight deadlines.

Results and thanks to participants

In the expert's assessment, the creation of the radio-electronic "dome" forced the Russian side to pause, begin modernising its drones, and seek alternative control methods. This confirms that countering enemy drones is not limited to their physical destruction but also includes disrupting the link between the operator and the aircraft.

At the same time, electronic warfare means are not a universal defence against all types of UAVs. Their effectiveness depends on the enemy's communication technology, the characteristics of one's own equipment, and countermeasure methods. Concluding his report, Serhiy "Flash" thanked everyone who participated in the operation: «Дякуємо всім учасникам за працю та службу» (Thank you to all participants for your work and service).
