Economic tool for achieving peace

US Energy Minister Chris Wright outlined Washington's strategy aimed at ending the armed conflict. According to him, the agreement between the United States and Russia, which provides for the regulation of diesel fuel trade, is intended to demonstrate the economic benefit to Moscow in the event of a cessation of the war against Ukraine.

The official detailed the initiative in an interview with the CNBC television channel.

Position of the US administration

Wright emphasised that President Donald Trump's actions are focused on finding new diplomatic paths to achieve a goal that has not yet been reached. He noted that the duration of the conflict is approaching five years, describing it as a "bloody, terrible war".

(President Trump is trying to use different diplomacy to achieve a goal that has not yet been reached. This war is almost 5 years old. It is a bloody, terrible war. It is not going well for Russia. It is a catastrophe for Ukraine, and President Trump is trying to find a way to bring peace), the minister stated.

Incentive mechanism

According to the US Department of Energy, Russia currently lacks the ability to export diesel fuel due to a domestic deficit of the resource. However, as Chris Wright explained, the proposal envisions a situation where production exceeds consumption, allowing the surplus to reach international markets.

The minister denied claims that this constitutes an easing of the situation regarding Russia.

(Everyone calls this an easing of the situation with Russia. That is not the case. It is an attempt to put a carrot in front of Russia, saying that you can reduce the conflict. You can produce a little more diesel fuel than you consume. We will allow it to flow to global markets. So look at this as an incentive to end the war), he added.
