Chinese private space company Galactic Energy has announced ambitious plans to develop a new rocket launch technology using magnetism. The first launches are expected to take place within the next few years, according to South China Morning Post.
The proposed concept resembles the principle of a vertical train launch moving on a magnetic cushion. Instead of a traditional start using chemical fuel, Galactic Energy plans to use superconducting magnets to create powerful magnetic levitation, which will silently accelerate rockets to supersonic speeds. After this, the engines will ignite, and the rocket will continue its journey into space.
This method allows for a significant reduction in the noise accompanying traditional rocket launches, as well as potentially reducing equipment wear. The project is part of China's drive to secure a more prominent place in the global space market and compete with giants such as SpaceX. However, the technology is still in the development stage, and many technical and financial issues remain to be resolved.
