A new approach to oral hygiene

A group of Chinese researchers has presented an innovative toothbrush capable of destroying harmful microorganisms using electric current. The uniqueness of the development lies in the fact that its bristles independently generate micro-charges directly during the process of brushing teeth.

How the piezoelectric effect works

The bristles of the new device are made from PVDF material, which has piezoelectric properties. When the brush contacts the surface of the teeth and friction occurs, this material generates electric charges. This process initiates the formation of active oxygen species, which in turn destroy bacterial biofilms.

Clinical trial results

The effectiveness of the development has been confirmed by a three-month clinical study. The results of the experiment established that using such a brush helped volunteers reduce the amount of dental plaque and lower the level of gum inflammation.

Prospects for the application of the technology

It is worth noting that piezoelectric materials have previously been tested in dentistry: they were used for teeth whitening and creating antibacterial coatings for implants. Now, this technology has been implemented for the first time in an everyday hygiene item familiar to everyone.
