Ban on lead ammunition: European Parliament decision

The European Parliament unanimously supported the initiative to ban the use of lead shot cartridges for hunting purposes. The decision has already been adopted; it remains to await approval from the European Commission.

Seven-year transition period

Following official approval, the ban will enter into force after a seven-year transition period. From that point on, the sale and use of lead shot will be completely prohibited within the territory of the European Union.

Reason — lead toxicity

The primary reason for the ban is the high level of lead toxicity. According to data from the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), birds can be poisoned by swallowing shot fragments. In addition, lead can enter the human body through the consumption of wild game meat killed with such cartridges.

Alternatives and restrictions

A cheaper alternative is steel shot. However, it is not suitable for many older models of shotguns, which may create problems for hunters using outdated weapons.

Key date

The decision will enter into force on 10 October 2026 — it is on this day that the legislative process is due to conclude, provided the European Commission confirms the initiative.
