Deployment of fortifications in the border region
Estonia plans to place approximately 150 protected shelters in the Ida-Virumaa region. These measures are part of the Baltic Defence Line, which the country is building jointly with Latvia and Lithuania. This was reported by the Estonian public broadcasting company ERR.
According to the plans, the distribution of future structures will be as follows: 100 facilities will appear on state-owned property, while another approximately 50 will be located on municipal and private plots. To implement this stage, the authorities need to reach agreements with landowners regarding the lease of the land, payment of compensation, or the full purchase of the land plots.
Overall scale of the project and its deadline
Estonia intends to install up to 600 concrete bunkers along the entire eastern border by the end of 2027. The final architecture of the defence line envisages not only shelters but also anti-tank ditches and concrete barriers.
The main objective of creating the Baltic Defence Line is to strengthen NATO's eastern flank and ensure the deterrence of a potential military invasion.
Intelligence assessment of threats
It is worth noting that Estonian intelligence agencies previously stated that they do not expect a Russian attack on alliance member states in the near future. Despite this, the military potential of the Russian Federation and the situation near NATO's eastern borders remain under constant vigilant observation by the Baltic states.
