First-half statistics indicate a sharp decline in indicators

According to Dmytro Shushpanov, head of the department at the Institute of Demography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Ukraine is experiencing a rapid decline in the number of births. In his words, the overall indicator has decreased by almost 17%. In just the first six months of the current year, approximately 73,000 children were born in the country.

Decline in the birth rate per woman

The demographic indicator per woman has also significantly worsened. If before the full-scale invasion by Russia, that is, before February 2022, this index was 1.14, it has now fallen to a level of 0.8–0.9.

Risks after the end of hostilities

Dmytro Shushpanov warned that even after the cessation of active hostilities, the demographic situation in Ukraine may become more complicated. In his assessment, the country faces additional population losses due to the possible migration of some men to European countries.

The expert notes that some men may leave the country to reunite with their families, who are already in Europe. Thus, the combination of low birth rates and further outflow of people abroad may lead to the population of Ukraine continuing to shrink even after the end of the war.
