Eggs in the US become the most expensive in the world: stores introduce limits

The shortage is caused by an avian flu epidemic that wiped out millions of hens

Prices hit records

The US is experiencing a rapid rise in egg prices, and at present they are recognised as the most expensive in the world. In some states, the cost of a dozen has reached $10. Due to the acute shortage, major retail chains have begun introducing purchase limits.

For instance, at Costco Wholesale, customers are allowed to buy no more than three packs of eggs per person. At Trader Joe’s, the limit is even stricter – just one box of 12 eggs. Restrictions are also in place at the Sam’s Club chain, owned by Walmart Inc.

What caused the crisis?

The sharp increase in prices and the shortage are linked to the avian flu epidemic, with outbreaks beginning in early 2024. The disease quickly spread to poultry farms, forcing farmers to cull millions of hens, which led to a sharp reduction in supply.

Consequences for the market

The US is one of the world’s largest exporters of eggs, and the government has not yet introduced export restrictions. However, given the current level of shortage, this may become inevitable. If the situation does not stabilise, egg prices will continue to rise, and demand for imported supplies will increase, affecting global markets.
