Heavy snowfall hits Japan

Eastern and northern regions of Japan continue to suffer from heavy snowfall caused by winter atmospheric pressure and cold air masses. 

The snowstorms raging along the Sea of Japan coast have caused serious problems for several days, although their intensity is gradually decreasing. However, meteorologists warn of the risk of blizzards and possible avalanches, reports NHK World-Japan.

Record precipitation levels

As of Friday morning, according to data from the Japan Meteorological Agency, the highest snow depths were recorded in the following locations:

• Okura village (Yamagata Prefecture) — 1.99 metres;
• Uonuma city (Niigata Prefecture) — 1.94 metres;
• Shirakawa village (Gifu Prefecture) — 1.84 metres.

In some areas, precipitation has already exceeded the seasonal norm by two times.

Incidents and transport disruptions

In Hyogo Prefecture on the evening of 9 January, a car fell into a roadside river due to slippery roads, resulting in serious injuries to the driver. Police believe the cause of the accident was loss of vehicle control.

The following morning, the operation of the Yamagata Shinkansen super-express trains was temporarily suspended due to weather conditions, but service was restored after some time.

Forecasts and warnings

A new heavy snowfall is expected by Saturday morning, particularly in areas along the northwestern coast of the Sea of Japan. Authorities are warning residents of possible transport delays, strong wind gusts, high waves, and avalanche risks. There is also a possibility of power outages. Residents are advised to exercise caution and closely monitor weather reports.
