Switzerland to join Military Schengen

The European Union officially approved Switzerland's invitation to join the "Military Schengen" programme on 13 January, which aims to facilitate the movement of troops across Europe. This information was published on the official website of the EU Council.

According to the statement, the decision grants the Netherlands, acting as the project coordinator, the right to officially invite Switzerland to join Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO). 

The country submitted its application for participation in September 2024. Upon completion of administrative procedures, Switzerland will become a full member of this initiative.

The PESCO project is designed to standardise and simplify national procedures related to cross-border military transport. It provides for the rapid and efficient movement of personnel and equipment by road, rail, sea, or air within EU member states.

Previously, in 2021, Canada, Norway, and the United States received invitations to participate in the project, and the United Kingdom joined them in 2022.
