French Senate ratifies Ukraine-EU Association Agreement

Despite speculation and pressure from the Russian Federation to delay the process, another major step towards the ratification of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement was taken today. The French Senate voted in favour of the association by a majority.

A vote in the lower house of the French parliament is still to come, but as many are convinced, no problems should arise with that either.

The French Senate has just ratified the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement! I am at the scene of the event, and the hall is filled with enthusiasm. "Your freedom is our freedom!", – declared French Senator Jean-Yves Laconte from the rostrum.

The result of today's vote was dictated by the will of the Ukrainian people and the work of the Ukrainian delegation led by Petro Poroshenko in April this year. I am happy to be a participant in these great historical events.

Half the job is done; a vote in the lower house of the French parliament (the National Assembly) lies ahead. I believe that following today's result in the Senate, the ratification process in the National Assembly will yield a positive outcome for Ukraine. It is clear that France, one of the leaders of the European Union, welcomes Ukraine into the European family of nations.
