Opening Ukrainian airports is impossible under current security conditions

The resumption of operations at Ukrainian airports in the near future, announced by Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, raises doubts among experts, particularly given the current security situation in the country. 

According to aviation expert Konstantyn Kryvolap, opening air gates under military threat is impossible.

Security issues: not everything depends on a political decision

Kryvolap emphasised that a political decision cannot guarantee the safety of air transport, especially in the face of constant threats. He noted that it is impossible to protect airports from missile attacks without modern defence systems, such as Patriot. "How can the Mayor of Lviv guarantee safety from ballistic threats without having the corresponding means of protection?" the expert asks.

Contradiction with international standards

The expert also added that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requires airports to strictly adhere to safety standards. According to Kryvolap, it is practically impossible to "agree" with ICAO on the resumption of international flights given the current threats.

Lviv Mayor declares possible opening of airports

Earlier, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi stated that several airports in Ukraine would "definitely" begin operating this year if the corresponding political decision is made. He added that the technical capabilities exist for this, but did not specify which airports were meant.

Cargo flights: first steps towards resuming air traffic

Meanwhile, in October 2024, Ukrainian cargo airline Supernova, which is owned by Nova Poshta, received permission to operate flights from Prague to Kyiv and Lviv. However, the opening of passenger routes remains in question, according to experts, until security threats are fully eliminated.
