NATO considers two scenarios for security guarantees for Ukraine

The North Atlantic Alliance may offer Ukraine two options for security guarantees depending on the political and military situation.

The first scenario entails:

• A commitment by NATO members to provide Ukraine with substantial economic and military assistance for many years after the conclusion of a ceasefire agreement;
• The possibility of Ukraine joining the Alliance in the future.

The second scenario includes:

• The immediate extension of NATO's defensive obligations under Article 5 to Ukraine's unoccupied territories, including the provision of a nuclear umbrella;
• A commitment by the US, the EU, and Canada to defend Ukraine against a potential new invasion by Russia.

However, according to analysts, the second option is unlikely. Its implementation would face resistance both within NATO and from Russia.
