Fico threatens Ukraine again

Slovakia is ready to take tough measures against Ukraine if the issue of resuming Russian gas transit through its territory is not resolved. 

Prime Minister Robert Fico made this statement after a meeting with European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen, Reuters reports.

Fico accused Kyiv of causing economic damage to Slovakia due to the termination of the gas transit agreement with Russia via Ukraine. According to him, such a move undermines Bratislava's interests and threatens its energy security.

In response to the situation, the head of the Slovak government allowed for the possibility of cutting off emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine. He also mentioned the possible reduction of support for Ukrainian refugees.

These statements came against the backdrop of increasing pressure on Kyiv regarding the region's energy policy. Fico emphasised that Slovakia expects a constructive approach to resolving the issue but is ready to defend its interests if a compromise is not found.
