Zelensky confirms cyberattack on Russian emergency alert system as response to cyber strike

President Volodymyr Zelensky officially confirmed that Ukraine carried out interference with the Russian emergency alert system. This action was taken as a direct response to a cyberattack during which Russia targeted the Ukrainian system and sent users fake warnings about the presence of a nuclear threat.

Context of regular attacks on civilian infrastructure

The head of state detailed the situation during an interview with the PBS News channel. Zelensky emphasised that Russian cyberattacks are directed against the civilian population and occur systematically. They affect various spheres of citizens' lives in order to sow chaos.

«Вони атакували нашу систему. Це була кібератака, одна з сотень і тисяч таких, що росіяни вже здійснили на банківську систему, на пенсії, соціальну підтримку, на багато різних видів підтримки цивільного населення» (They attacked our system. It was a cyberattack, one of hundreds and thousands of such attacks that the Russians have already carried out on the banking system, on pensions, social support, on many different types of support for the civilian population), the president noted.

Response to established Russian involvement

Zelensky explained the decision-making mechanism: after intelligence established Russia's involvement in the incident, Ukraine decided to respond.

«Ми лише відповідаємо на їхню атаку. Тому звісно після їхньої (росіян – Ред.) атаки, всім було зрозуміло, і нашим людям, і розвідці, що це вони, ми відповіли» (We are only responding to their attack. So, of course, after their (Russians – Ed.) attack, it was clear to everyone, both to our people and to intelligence, that it was them, so we responded), Zelensky added.
