Split in US leadership over strategy against Iran
Following the midterm elections to Congress, the administration of US President Donald Trump has found itself in a state of uncertainty regarding further steps in the conflict with Iran. According to sources, two opposing camps have formed within the administration: the first insists on resuming strikes, while the second advocates for the complete termination of the military operation.
Opposing approaches to ending the war
According to insiders, some officials advise the president to deliver new strikes to Iran and only then achieve peace. The goal of such a strategy is to exit the war before the current head of state's term ends. However, other representatives of the administration believe that Trump should accept the losses suffered and wind down the military operation.
As noted by The Wall Street Journal, this situation demonstrates a deepening of the internal political split within the administration against the backdrop of the Republicans' failure in the midterm elections.
Vice President JD Vance's position
On 4 November, US Vice President JD Vance named the war with Iran as the cause of the Republican Party's devastating defeat in the elections. WSJ added that such an accusation is a rare moment of distancing Vance from the president, on whom he built his political career.
Moreover, this statement indicates that Vance was against waging the war from the very beginning, despite his previous repeated public statements in defence of this decision.
