On the evening of Thursday, 29 October, an unconventional rescue mission was launched in the Zehmtal district of the German Ore Mountains. At approximately 22:00, an emergency call was received reporting that a man was trapped in a wooden structure located between 10 and 12 metres above the ground.

Man refused help

According to the publication TAG24, the incident occurred near the railway line connecting Annaberg-Buchholz and Cranzahl. The victim was in a converted hut, but due to severe alcohol intoxication, he lost the ability to descend to the ground on his own.

Fire brigade units and high-altitude work specialists arrived at the scene immediately. The initial plan involved using rope equipment for the evacuation. However, the process was complicated by the man himself, who, despite the obvious danger, initially refused the proposed measures.

«Особа, яка зацікавлена, спочатку усно відмовилася від запропонованих допоміжних дій, незважаючи на пропозицію поговорити» (The person concerned initially verbally refused the proposed assistance measures, despite an offer to talk), a fire service representative stated.

After consultations with the police and medical staff, the rescuers decided to continue the operation. They reached the man using a ladder, secured him on a stretcher, and safely lowered him from the height.

Rescuers reached the scene by handcar

A distinctive feature of this operation was the logistical aspect. Since the hut was located in close proximity to the railway track, the fastest way to reach the victim turned out to be a manual railway handcar.

After the man was lowered to the ground, he was placed on a special trolley and transported along the tracks to the location where an ambulance crew was waiting.

A total of approximately 70 emergency service personnel participated in the evacuation. Due to the works, traffic on the RB 80 railway line between Chemnitz and Cranzahl was temporarily suspended. The operation lasted until approximately 01:30 in the morning.
