Video offering money for participation in protest
The media landscape in Ukraine has heated up due to a new wave of conflict between the Kyiv city authorities and the public. The centre of attention has become a video published by journalist Kostiantyn Andriyuk on Facebook.
The recording captures a moment when young people are offered a financial reward for participating in an action against Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko. The video's author suggests that the purpose of this stunt is to create a false impression that the protest participants are paid.
Financial scale of the alleged "black" campaign
According to data circulated on the internet, approximately one million US dollars may have been spent over the last five days on countermeasures against the rally against the capital's head.
The estimated cost of the initial media campaign aimed at disrupting and discrediting the action reaches at least 400,000 dollars. The most pressing question remains the source of these funds: if the published data is confirmed, it involves significant financial resources.
Influence methods: from bots to censorship
Several directions of possible discrediting of protest actions have been described online:
- Media pressure and involvement of military. A week before the action, video appeals were massively distributed via social media bots and controlled media outlets. They called on servicemen and other citizens to refrain from participating in the protest, presenting it as "inappropriate during wartime".
- Staging provocations. During the rally itself, according to source information, a group of "paid activists" with placards supporting notorious bloggers was brought onto the site. Photos of these individuals were quickly spread through bot farms to create the illusion that the action was commissioned.
- "Stop-lists" in media. A regime of strict censorship was in effect in most top-rated publications. The press either completely ignored the event or presented the information in a maximally smoothed, neutral format.
- Fake video content. Staged video was created and put into circulation, allegedly recording the distribution of money to protest participants. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were reportedly spent on its further distribution via bots and media.
- Attack on social network Threads. Both before and after the rally, the platform suffered a massive attack by artificial accounts. They promoted a single narrative: the action is bought and aimed at destabilising the situation in the capital.
Legal assessment and context of events
The use of bot farms, buying media loyalty, and producing staged materials may be qualified not only as a violation of democratic governance standards but also become grounds for attention from the SBI and NABU.
The spending of such resources to protect the political image of the capital's authorities against the backdrop of military and economic challenges causes outrage in the public.
Recall that on 13 October, the Verkhovna Rada supported the proposal by People's Deputy Maryana Bezuhla to summon Kyiv City Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko to parliament for a hearing on the capital's preparation for winter and the protection of critical infrastructure. Meanwhile, public activists announced an action near the Kyiv City State Administration on 17 October demanding the mayor's resignation.
