Voting start and election objectives
On Sunday, 25 October 2026, the first round of presidential elections officially began in Bulgaria. Polling stations opened their doors to citizens at 7:00 am. This procedure will determine the new head of state, who will hold the office for a five-year term starting in January 2027.
Record number of candidates
The main feature of this campaign has been the unprecedented number of participants. According to data, 27 candidates are running for the presidential post. This is the highest figure since the country introduced the mechanism of direct presidential elections.
Victory conditions and possible second round
According to the rules, victory in the first round will be won by the candidate who receives more than 50% of valid votes, provided that the overall voter turnout also exceeds 50%. If none of the candidates can meet these criteria, a repeat vote will take place on 1 November. The two candidates who received the most support in the first round will advance to the second round.
Voter statistics and technology use
As of 22 October, according to the Central Election Commission, approximately 6.59 million Bulgarian citizens have the right to vote. Among them, 46,001 individuals will be voting for the first time.
Electronic voting machines are used at polling stations where more than 300 voters are registered. Such devices have been installed at 9,373 polling stations across the country. Two machines are operating at 2,249 of them, with the total number of technical units deployed amounting to 11,622.
Voting abroad
For Bulgarian citizens residing outside the country, 613 polling stations have been opened in 60 states. The possibility of voting using electronic machines is provided at 242 of these polling stations. This technology is being applied for the first time in Warsaw, Bucharest, Bratislava, Budapest, and Helsinki.
Voting timeframes
Voting will continue until 20:00. If queues remain at the polling stations by this time, the process may be extended, but no later than 21:00. These time limits apply both in Bulgaria itself and at overseas polling stations, according to local time.
