In late August 2026, Donald Trump Jr. and Russian oligarch Umar Kremlov spent two days at a remote hunting camp in western Mongolia. This was reported by the Financial Times. The event has drawn attention against the backdrop of ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine, as it highlights the personal connections between the US president's son and a representative of the Russian business community close to the authorities.
According to the investigation, the trip was conducted under the protection of the US Secret Service. Republican donor Kevin Small was present in the group. Umar Kremlov, who heads the International Boxing Association (IBA), arrived in Mongolia from Kazakhstan accompanied by businessman Artur Martirossov. According to one of the journalists' sources, Trump Jr. and Kremlov avoided taking joint photos while staying at the camp.
In addition to hunting, the American leader's son held a meeting with the President of Mongolia. A representative of Trump Jr. described this meeting as informal. The president's son's representative confirmed the fact of shared leisure, explaining it as friendship and a passion for outdoor recreation.
A representative of Donald Trump Jr. emphasises that the relationship with Umar Kremlov is not of a business nature. The Financial Times does not provide evidence that peace agreements regarding Ukraine were discussed during the hunting trip. Nevertheless, former counterintelligence officials who commented to FT issued a warning. They caution that Russian intelligence services may attempt to use such personal contacts to advance their own interests within the American political environment.
At the same time, experts stress: the existence of an opportunity for influence does not mean it has already been realised. Currently, there is no confirmed data on the transfer of political proposals or the impact of this trip on negotiations regarding the Ukrainian conflict.
Attention to these contacts increased following earlier reports of financial support. As ProPublica found, Umar Kremlov partially paid for Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding events in the Bahamas, including the rental of a private island and fireworks. After these publications, Donald Trump stated that, to his knowledge, the funds spent had been returned. Representatives of both men previously explained their relationship as friendly ties.
Thus, the new publications confirm the fact of shared leisure, although the potential political consequences of these meetings remain a matter of assessment.
