Singer Django, whose real name is Oleksiy Piddubny, received the title of "Honoured Artist of the DPR" from the Russian occupiers. This award was presented to him by order of the leader of the so-called "DPR", Denis Pushilin, during an event that propagandists called the "Day of Reunification of Donbas and Novorossiya with the Russian Federation".
Performance at a propagandistic event
Russian media report that representatives of the occupation authorities were present at the event, where they discussed the preconditions for the so-called "special military operation" and the reasons for the "reunification". Piddubny also delivered a speech in which he mentioned his first concert in the occupied territories.
"The first concert took place in Luhansk at the Lenin Palace of Culture on 23 February 2015, Defender of the Fatherland Day. That is when my direct acquaintance with these events, which are being discussed today, began… This is part of Russian history. Without knowing your own history, you do not know at all what is happening," the musician stated.
In addition, he emphasised that he had been opposing the Euromaidan and the state coup in Ukraine since 2013, claiming that the movement's goal was to restore the European course. Piddubny also expressed the belief that the "influence of the West" on Ukraine was aimed at "provoking Russia".
Biography and ideological stance
Oleksiy Piddubny was born on 8 January 1969 in Kyiv. He started playing music in childhood and acquired the stage pseudonym "Django" in the late 1980s during his military service, inspired by his love of playing the guitar. In the early 2000s, the musician founded a band under his pseudonym.
Since 2014, Django has begun publicly spreading the propagandistic narrative of "brotherhood" between Ukrainians and Russians. He claimed that Ukraine was waging war against its "own people" and repeatedly visited the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions with concerts. As a result, he was added to the "Myrotvorets" database.
Court conviction and activities during the full-scale war
After the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Django has used his popularity to spread Kremlin propaganda and justify the war. In 2024, he became a trusted person for Vladimir Putin in the so-called "presidential elections".
The Security Service of Ukraine notified the musician of suspicion related to such activities. In 2025, the Vinnytsia City Court issued a verdict in absentia: 12 years of imprisonment for incitement to war.
