Acknowledgement of systematic abuses on air

Vojvodina Public Television (RTV) officially acknowledged that it had failed to fulfil its duties properly for a prolonged period. The channel admitted to suppressing key events and presenting information in a biased manner. This statement came against the backdrop of sharp criticism directed at the broadcaster for not airing celebrations of the Student List party's victory in the early parliamentary elections in Serbia.

Reaction to the election scandal

According to the publication Vreme, a day before the public apology, RTV ignored numerous video recordings of the celebrations, despite some staff members objecting to this stance. Only the following day did the news bulletin begin with footage shot in the streets of Novi Sad and other Serbian cities, where people were celebrating the voting results.

At the start of the broadcast, presenter Goran Eror read an official statement in which the editorial team acknowledged that for years it had turned a blind eye to reality and presented facts in a largely one-sided manner. According to Eror, journalists had not asked the necessary questions or had remained silent altogether. It was for this that the channel apologised to its viewers.

Internal policy issues and personnel changes

Goran Eror also noted that a group of RTV employees had attempted to create conditions for the free work of journalists and editors who adhered to professional ethical principles. However, he said, they had failed to achieve this in time.

On the same day, it was announced that Nenad Čačić, the acting editor-in-chief of RTV's First Television Programme, had resigned. This change occurred following negotiations between the channel's staff, representatives of the Nezavisnost trade union, and RTV General Director Goran Karadžić. Blažo Popović was appointed as the acting editor-in-chief.

Čačić's resignation was one of the trade union's key demands. Its representatives had raised this demand a year earlier, claiming that RTV had lost its professional independence and had begun covering events in the interests of the authorities.
