Arbitration court ruling changes the rules of the game
The Ukrainian national hockey team is at risk of losing its status as a participant in the elite division at the 2027 World Championship. The cause of this situation could be the return of Russian teams to the international hockey family. The publication "Sport-Express" reports on the potential consequences of this scenario.
The key factor was the ruling of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dated 30 October. According to this decision, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is obliged to admit the Russian national teams to the five 2027 World Championships. This ruling cancelled previous decisions regarding their suspension.
Conflict of interest in the tournament format
The complexity of the situation lies in the current IIHF rules, which were approved back in 2022. They stipulate that Russia and Belarus, upon their return to international competition, must be placed in their former divisions. Meanwhile, the number of participants in the elite group of the men's World Championship is fixed at 16 teams.
It is precisely due to the limited number of slots that the Ukrainian national team is under threat. In May this year, it took second place in the first division. This allowed the team to earn the right to compete among the strongest hockey players on the planet for the first time in 20 years. Currently, Ukraine has already been officially included in Group A of the 2027 World Championship, which is scheduled to be held in Germany.
Ukraine is the weakest link in the elite division
As noted by "Sport-Express", the Ukrainian national team has the lowest world ranking among the 16 teams that have already secured their places in the upcoming tournament. Therefore, it may be considered a candidate for exclusion from the elite division to free up a spot for Russia's return.
The IIHF confirmed that it received the CAS ruling "with disappointment" but promised to comply with it. The federation also warned of the possibility of reviewing the competition format and match schedule.
At this point, no final decision has been made regarding the mechanics of Russia's return to the World Championship and Ukraine's retention of its place in the elite division.
