Lack of a queue of candidates for the key position

The dismissal of Ruslan Kravchenko from the post of Prosecutor General has left the Office of the Prosecutor General without a permanent head. According to sources in political circles, there is currently no significant number of people eager to lead this body.

This information was published by "Ukrainska Pravda". According to the publication, following Kravchenko's dismissal, after which he was later found in Vienna, there is still no significant queue of candidates for the Prosecutor General position.

Advantages of the acting status

Olena Shcherban, head of the legal department of the Anti-Corruption Centre, expressed the view that it might be beneficial for Bankova for the head of the Office of the Prosecutor General to remain in the status of an acting official for a long time.

According to the expert, this format allows for the rapid appointment and dismissal of the official, while they retain the key powers of the Prosecutor General. Specifically, this includes the right to enter information into the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations regarding Members of Parliament, as well as to approve certain covert investigative actions.

Control without risks

Olena Shcherban also suggested that the use of the acting official institution allows the authorities to maintain control over the Office of the Prosecutor General, avoiding the risks associated with a full political appointment of a new head. In her words, such a risk could be potential criticism from the European Union.
