Circumstances of the death of the British serviceman

British publication BBC published information about the death of the first representative of the country's armed forces to be killed on Ukrainian territory after the start of the Russian Federation's full-scale invasion. It concerns 28-year-old lance corporal George Hooly, who served in the Parachute Regiment.

According to journalists, the death resulted from an explosion that occurred during trials of a new defence system by Ukrainian troops.

Timeline of the incident

The incident took place on the morning of 6 December 2025. The location of the incident was significantly far from the front line. The commander of the deceased described the situation as follows: he "heard a sudden loud explosion and saw a flash". At the moment of the explosion, he was standing with his back to the scene, so he did not see the source of the explosion, but immediately understood that it had occurred where Hooly was located.

The serviceman sustained serious injuries. He underwent surgery, but on 9 December, George Hooly died in a hospital in Kyiv.

Government reaction and investigation

The investigation into the circumstances of the Briton's death was conducted partially in closed mode.

Meanwhile, London confirms the presence of a limited group of British military personnel in Ukraine. Their main mission is to provide support to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and to guard diplomatic facilities. However, prior to the tragic incident involving George Hooly, no official reports of the presence of British paratroopers in the country had emerged.
