Moscow threatens nuclear response over British TV war simulation

The Russian diplomatic mission in the United Kingdom issued a statement containing threats regarding the potential use of nuclear weapons. This reaction from Moscow came shortly after the broadcast of a British television programme in which experts modelled a hypothetical scenario of armed conflict between Russia and NATO countries.

Television simulation scenario

In the programme The War Game on Sky News, British politicians and former diplomats acted out a scenario of a Russian attack on the territory of the United Kingdom. According to the storyline, the Prime Minister, a role played by Michael Gove, ordered retaliatory strikes on the cities of Murmansk and Kaliningrad.

Russian embassy reaction

Following the broadcast, the Russian embassy in London published a message with harsh threats. The diplomatic mission stated that those advocating plans to blockade or strike Kaliningrad should not harbour illusions about the consequences.

«Тим, хто виступає за плани блокади або удару по Калінінграду, не варто мати ілюзій щодо наслідків» (Those who advocate plans to blockade or strike Kaliningrad should not harbour illusions about the consequences), the embassy emphasised.

The statement also added that any military action by the United Kingdom or NATO against Russian territory would allegedly be met with a response using "all available means", including nuclear weapons. At the same time, the embassy claims that Russia does not seek confrontation with NATO and Europe and does not plan to attack them.

Strategic significance of the Kaliningrad region

The Kaliningrad region is a Russian exclave located between Poland and Lithuania, both members of the North Atlantic Alliance. The Russian embassy's message also mentioned a publication by The Paper, which described this region as one of Russia's most vulnerable points.

This area is of critical importance for NATO security due to the Suwalki corridor — a section of the Polish-Lithuanian border located between Belarus and the Kaliningrad region.

Evacuation preparations

Poland and Lithuania are already developing a joint plan for the evacuation of the civilian population in the event of a large-scale military threat. This plan is to include, among other things, routes through the Suwalki corridor and the possible evacuation of residents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

According to Vilmanutas Vitkuskas, head of the Lithuanian National Crisis Management Centre, Warsaw and Vilnius are currently jointly analysing procedures, logistics and infrastructure capabilities.
