Kyiv's position on the safe zone

Ukraine is considering the possibility of reaching a compromise on the establishment of a demilitarised zone in the territory of the Donetsk region. This was stated by Serhiy Leshchenko, adviser to the President of Ukraine.

According to him, such an initiative could be presented during negotiations at the level of state leaders.

Geographical boundaries of the proposal

Leshchenko emphasised that this is not about demilitarising the entire region, but only a limited section. The concept envisages the formation of a zone directly around the line of combat confrontation, covering the territory on both sides of it.

Official statement

«Україна готова рухатися до компромісу. І, наприклад, демілітаризована зона на території Донецької області — не на всій, а на тій частині, яка є навколо лінії бойового зіткнення по обидва боки, — може бути порушена на переговорах лідерів. Україна це готувала як одну з пропозицій» (Ukraine is ready to move towards a compromise. And, for example, a demilitarised zone in the territory of the Donetsk region — not the entire one, but the part that is around the line of combat confrontation on both sides — could be raised in leaders' negotiations. Ukraine prepared this as one of the proposals), stated the President's Office adviser.
