Shift to prolonged field operations

Germany’s elite special forces unit, the KSK, is significantly revising its approach to military training. This decision has been made in light of a potential conflict with Russia. The Bild newspaper reports this, citing statements by the unit’s commander, Andreas Kühne.

According to journalists, previous tactics assumed that soldiers would return to base within three days of an operation being deployed. Today, the focus has shifted to the ability to operate in field conditions for a significantly longer period. Training includes carrying out tasks in extremely low temperatures.

Direct orientation towards the adversary

Andreas Kühne emphasised that the changes have a specific purpose. “Ми цілком конкретно орієнтуємося на противника в особі Росії” (We are specifically orienting ourselves towards the adversary in the person of Russia), the unit commander stated.

These changes reflect a broader review of combat training requirements for German special forces against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between Moscow and NATO member states. Particular attention is paid to the ability of servicemen to operate far from their bases for extended periods, maintain combat effectiveness in difficult weather conditions, and carry out tasks under conditions of limited supply.

The role of KSK in the security system

The KSK (Bundeswehr Special Forces Command) is an elite unit of the German armed forces. Its primary purpose is to conduct special operations, which include reconnaissance missions and actions deep in enemy rear areas. The commander’s statements indicate that the training process is increasingly adapting to scenarios of prolonged, high-intensity conflict.
