Danish government leader Mette Frederiksen expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the heads of Finland and Norway, who held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to her, this initiative was not coordinated with other European countries.
Scepticism regarding the effectiveness of the contact
Responding to questions from TV2 journalists, Frederiksen stated her uncertainty about the expediency of such a format of communication. She noted that she does not understand what results Finland and Norway expect to achieve through this step.
“I really do not understand what, in the opinion of these two countries, can be achieved in this way,” the Danish Prime Minister emphasised.
Position on joint diplomacy
The Danish politician stressed that all European states must clearly coordinate their actions in interaction with Moscow. Frederiksen reminded that European partners had previously emphasised the importance of joint diplomatic steps, especially when it comes to possible visits to Russia.
Explanation from Stubb and Støre
Earlier, Finnish President Alexander Stubb clarified that he, together with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, had spoken with Putin on behalf of their own states, not on behalf of the entire European Union. Thus, this phone contact was not positioned as a joint EU initiative.
