Marina Sapozhko, wife of Brovary mayor Ihor Sapozhko, has come under scrutiny after it emerged that she is renting a premium-class vehicle — a 2023 Range Rover Sport — for a sum significantly below market rates. The rental fee is just 10,000 hryvnias a month, whereas the actual market cost of renting such a vehicle ranges from 124,000 to 145,000 hryvnias a month. Meanwhile, according to data from the National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP), the minimum annual valuation of this car exceeds one million hryvnias.
Notably, Marina Sapozhko's 2023 declaration makes no mention of the car she is renting. The documents list other vehicles: a 2019 Range Rover Sport, a 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser rented by her husband, and a new 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 purchased by Ihor Sapozhko. However, photos found in the media indicate that she is actually using a 2023 Range Rover Sport, which can cost between 4.5 and 10 million hryvnias in car dealerships.
The car's lessor is the company "Ukrgefest," which deals with elevator maintenance. Over the past seven years, it has won 225 tenders from Brovary City Council communal enterprises for a total of nearly 48 million hryvnias. Among the won tenders is a contract for elevator maintenance signed by Brovary mayor Ihor Sapozhko. These financial ties raise suspicions of a potential conflict of interest.
The National Agency on Corruption Prevention confirmed that Marina Sapozhko is indeed using a car rented at a significantly reduced price. Transport expert Yaroslav Mintus noted that a rental price of 10,000 hryvnias a month for such a vehicle is absurdly low: "За эту сумму невозможно арендовать даже бюджетный Peugeot для такси" (For this amount, it is impossible to rent even a budget Peugeot for a taxi).
Serhiy Mytkalek, a representative of the "Anti-Corruption Headquarters," stated that the situation indicates a possible administrative corruption violation. He emphasised that the legal link between Mayor Sapozhko and the company providing services at a reduced cost requires attention from law enforcement agencies.
Journalists attempted to obtain comments from Marina Sapozhko, Ihor Sapozhko, and representatives of "Ukrgefest," but all parties declined to comment. A representative of "Ukrgefest" even stated that the company would "never" respond to journalists' requests.
This situation raises questions about potential corrupt links between the mayor's family and a contractor that receives multi-million hryvnia contracts from the city council. The reduced rental cost of a premium-class car raises doubts about a conflict of interest and requires a deeper investigation by law enforcement agencies.
The lifestyle of the official's family, funded by the city budget, continues to cause concern in society and among journalists.
