Russian warship fires on Turkish vessel

Another incident involving Russia and Turkey occurred today. The crew of a Russian military ship fired on a civilian Turkish vessel.

The incident took place in the Aegean Sea near the Greek island of Lemnos.

According to the press service of the Russian Ministry of Defence, this measure was prompted by the risk of a collision between the two ships. The Turkish seiner allegedly did not respond to attempts by Russian military personnel to establish radio contact, nor to signal flares or other signals, and was heading straight for the side of the anchored Russian frigate.

After being fired upon, the Turkish fishing vessel changed course.

Turkish officials have not yet released their version of events.
