Viktor Yanukovych drowned in Lake Baikal

On the evening of 20 March, an incident occurred on Lake Baikal, in which the son of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, Viktor Yanukovych Jr., drowned.

 

According to the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Irkutsk Oblast, a car drove onto the ice of Lake Baikal on 20 March, with passengers intending to take photographs. The ice gave way, and the car sank.

 

The depth of the lake at this location exceeds 20 metres.

 

Five passengers managed to escape from the sinking car, but the driver drowned. He turned out to be Viktor Yanukovych Jr.

 

The survivors reached the shore and were taken to the settlement of Sakhurta. Shortly afterwards, rescuers found the body of the driver of the submerged car.

 

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations is not commenting on the identity of the person who drowned. However, Yanukovych's associates and friends of the deceased confirm that it was Viktor Yanukovych Jr.

 

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, signs prohibiting driving onto the ice are posted at this location, but the driver of the car somehow disregarded basic safety measures.
