Margaret Brennan, a presenter on the American television channel CBS, Margaret Brennan, made a controversial statement, claiming that freedom of speech had become the "cause of genocide" in Europe. She made this statement during a discussion of Vice President Vance's speech at the Munich Conference. In a debate with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Brennan expressed the view that the Nazis had used freedom of speech as an instrument to carry out genocide in Germany.

Contradictions between politicians

Margaret Brennan reminded the audience that in a country where freedom of speech was used as a weapon for violence, it should not be perceived as an absolute value. She also drew attention to the fact that Vance had met with representatives of a far-right political party that has historical ties to extremist groups.

Marco Rubio, for his part, disagreed with such a claim, stating that freedom of speech has nothing to do with the commission of genocide. He emphasised that the genocide was organised by the Nazi authoritarian regime, which, in his view, did not allow freedom of speech in the occupied territories.

Vance's reaction

Later, Vance commented on the ongoing debate, noting that it was a "crazy exchange of opinions". He expressed bewilderment at the claim that freedom of speech could have been the cause of the Holocaust, calling such a position erroneous.
