Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the number of fraud cases has risen significantly. In 2022, losses from online fraud and social engineering increased by 96%, reaching UAH 1 billion. In the first quarter of 2024, law enforcement agencies opened more than 24,000 fraud cases. Experts link this to the deteriorating economic situation, which makes people more vulnerable to manipulation.
After February 2022, "info gypsies" – fraudsters who sell useless information products while promising an "easy" way to earn – became more active. Victims pay large sums for promises of learning how to make money, but the result is zero. One notable example is the scheme of Robert Fletcher, which defrauded thousands of Ukrainians of $200 million by promising high-yield investments.
Currently, the market is flooded with those who "teach" how to earn on cryptocurrencies. One of the most notorious fraudsters in this field is Alexander Orlovsky, who promises to teach crypto trading without initial capital through his Financial Freedom Academy (FFA). Payments for the courses are directed to the accounts of "front" entrepreneurs, indicating possible financial fraud.
Ekaterina Shukhina, known as Investanuta and Katya Crypto, also offers cryptocurrency courses through her non-existent academy, Profit Lady. Her scheme is similar to Orlovsky's methods: high training fees and payments to personal bank accounts.
