US interested in holding elections in Ukraine

Special envoy on the Russia-Ukraine war, General Keith Kellogg, appointed by Donald Trump, stated that the US is interested in holding elections in Ukraine, particularly in the event of a ceasefire agreement being reached.

In an interview with Reuters, he emphasised that presidential and parliamentary elections “должны состояться” (should take place), despite the ban on voting in Ukraine under martial law. In his view, democratic countries hold elections even during wartime, and this process strengthens democratic institutions.

Reuters also reports that the issue of elections is being discussed in Trump’s circle as an element of his strategy for settling the war. According to sources, the US side is considering the possibility of pressuring Kyiv to make elections part of a ceasefire agreement with Russia.

However, according to representatives of the Ukrainian authorities, no official requests to hold elections from the Trump administration have been received so far.
