Pope Francis may step down

The question of the possible resignation of the 88-year-old Pope Francis from his post as head of the Roman Catholic Church has once again come into focus. Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, in an interview with the Italian publication Corriere della Sera, expressed the view that the pontiff may make such a decision if his health does not allow him to perform his official duties.

Hospitalisation and serious diagnosis

Pope Francis was recently hospitalised on an emergency basis due to complications related to bronchitis. Doctors diagnosed him with bilateral pneumonia, which caused concern in the Vatican and beyond.

Responding to a question about the likelihood of the pontiff's abdication, Cardinal Ravasi noted: «Я так полагаю». ("I suppose so.") According to him, Francis will make the final decision independently, based on his well-being and ability to fulfil his duties. He may consult with his entourage, but the final choice will be made by him personally.

Planned to complete the Christian Jubilee Year

Despite health problems, the Pope aimed to see the planned events through to the end, including the celebration of the Christian Jubilee Year, which is observed by the Catholic Church. However, a deterioration in his condition may alter these plans.
