Macron proposes possible deployment of EU troops in Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron has put forward an initiative for the possible deployment of European states' troops in Ukraine to deter further aggression from Russia. However, this step cannot be viewed as the sole guarantee of security, as numerous unresolved questions remain.

This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with the Associated Press agency.

According to him, the French proposal is taking on a concrete form, but it is still unclear how the command structure will be organised, exactly how many military personnel may be involved, and what their powers will be in the event of a conflict escalation.

Zelensky noted that this issue had been discussed with both Macron and former US President Donald Trump. He stated that Ukraine is interested in this format of international support but does not consider it the only means of ensuring its security.

“It is important to understand who will command these troops, how they will react to potential strikes, attacks from the air, sea, or land. What will their powers be?” — the Ukrainian leader emphasised.

In response to a clarifying question from journalists on whether he had discussed these aspects directly with Macron, Zelensky replied that the dialogue on this matter is ongoing.
