Circumstances of the incident in Poznan

On 26 October, an incident involving a truck and railway traffic occurred in the city of Poznan. According to police information, a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen, driving a truck, entered the railway tracks at a time when traffic was already being blocked. As a result of the resulting traffic jam, the vehicle became stuck on the crossing.

Noticing an approaching train, the driver decided at the critical moment to crash through the railway barriers to move the vehicle out of the danger zone.

Details and the driver's condition

The truck's tank contained plant fertiliser, which is not classified as a hazardous substance. The driver was sober and held the appropriate licence to operate this type of vehicle.

Law enforcement response

Immediately after the incident, the man voluntarily went to a police station, where he admitted his guilt. However, his position changed during questioning at the Poznan District Prosecutor's Office: in the status of a suspect, he refused to acknowledge the fact of committing the alleged crime.

As stated by Lukasz Wawzhniak, press secretary of the District Prosecutor's Office in Poznan, preventive measures not involving deprivation of liberty were selected for the person involved in the case.

Possible punishment

The consequences of the incident for the driver are serious: police confiscated his driving licence. Under current Polish legislation, for creating a threat of a transport disaster, he faces a punishment of up to eight years in prison.
