It has emerged that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) fully financed the college education of Anwar al-Awlaki, a future leader of Al-Qaeda and one of the world's most notorious terrorists.

Al-Awlaki managed to secure financial support by falsifying details about his background. He claimed to be from Yemen, although he was actually born in Las Cruces, New Mexico. This news highlights how vulnerable educational grant distribution systems can be.

Al-Awlaki subsequently became a key figure in the terrorist network and one of the main ideologues of extremism.
