Strike on Transneft infrastructure
A series of explosions was recorded in Russia's Samara in the night leading into Friday, 2 October. According to analysts, the Linear Production and Dispatch Station (LPDS) "Samara" was likely hit. This facility is part of the Transneft system and is considered the largest storage park in Europe, designed for oil storage.
The conclusion that this specific station was damaged was drawn based on an analysis of open-source data. Videos have already appeared online showing flames on the facility's premises, according to eyewitnesses.
Scale of damaged infrastructure
The territory of the LPDS "Samara" covers over 216 hectares. It houses 71 tanks with a total capacity of over 1.6 million cubic metres of oil. In addition to the storage facilities, two oil pumping stations — "Samara-1" and "Samara-2" — and a specialised station for oil blending operate here.
The strategic significance of this hub is determined by the fact that four main oil pipelines intersect here:
- Almetyevsk — Kuibyshev;
- Kaltasinsky — Kuibyshev;
- Nizhnevartovsk — Kurgan — Kuibyshev;
- Guryev — Kuibyshev.
Oil is supplied through this system from Western Siberia, Tatarstan, Orenburg Oblast, and Kazakhstan.
Authorities' reaction and situation in the city
Local officials have not yet commented on information about the fire at the industrial facility. Previously, Samara mayor Ivan Noskov reported that ground public transport had temporarily suspended operations, while the metro was being used as a shelter for residents.
The mayor later stated that traffic had resumed after the missile threat was lifted. However, he noted that the danger from drones in the city persists.
Explosions in other regions
A similar situation developed in Volgograd, where explosions were also heard last night. City residents reported that drones were flying over Volgograd. A strong glow was visible in the area of the oil refinery and the "Kaustik" chemical plant, indicating a fire.
