Expectations from negotiations in Atlanta
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski commented on the upcoming meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, which will take place within the framework of the G20 summit in Atlanta. The Polish diplomat noted that such an event would constitute an awkward moment in diplomatic practice.
“In diplomacy, there are sometimes awkward moments, and this will be one of them,” Sikorski emphasised, commenting on the prospect of being at the event together with his Russian counterpart.
Poland's position and the role of Scandinavian neighbours
Discussing the strategy for interaction with Moscow, the head of Poland's foreign affairs department stated that he trusts the leaders of Finland and Norway regarding the representation of the region's interests during talks with Vladimir Putin. At the same time, Sikorski emphasised that he would prefer the European Union to conduct dialogue with the Kremlin as a single bloc.
Poland's status in the G20
Warsaw is participating in the current G20 foreign ministers' meeting as an invited country. The Polish delegation at the event in Atlanta is headed by Radosław Sikorski. It is worth noting that Poland is actively lobbying for permanent membership in this group. Achieving this goal requires the consent of all current G20 participants, including Russia.
